As the proprietor of Parenting in the 21st Century Group, LLC, I have always found joy in helping parents who came to the attention of the child welfare system and needed parenting education and support.  Later in my career parent education became the centerpiece with the focus shifting with the decade of the brain and neuroscience research. This research helped me understand how traumas impact our health and wellbeing for a lifetime.  Attachment-based research shows positive parenting is the key to healthy relationships.  Through this continuing research, we have grown in our understanding of how the brain works and the impacts of fear-based parenting on children's development. 

Sharing this information with parents is critical to establishing secure attachments and safe havens for children. 

Both Positive Discipline and Circle of Security training teaches we have a need to belong and be significant and we need secure attachment and safe havens.  We learn the importance of understanding emotions, how to navigate them, to problem solve, and find solutions.   Once we understand the child's or teen's needs, we understand what's behind the behavior, and ways to better communicate with the child or teen.    Communication that is both kind and firm, engaging the child or teen in problem solving, and finding solutions are in fact the foundation to better parenting results.

When we know more, we do better, we reflect, and parental reflection is the key.
